Developing a town-centre building in Coalville for use by the Community.
The old Working Men’s Club in Coalville was purchased by the church in 1996 in a partially derelict state. It has gradually been upgraded by volunteers in the years since but still does not have ready open access for the community. Significant redevelopment is now needed for the building to be operated to its full potential as a community place for local people and groups from across the district.
This project is funded by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, which was set up in September 1999 to help tackle the social and economic problems faced by coalfield communities in England, Scotland and Wales. Between September 1999 and March 2005, the Trust spent approx. £100m on approx 1300 projects, and is planning to spend at least another £50m by March 2008.
Our Vision
Our vision is a personal commitment to the community. We will restore old ruins, rebuild and renovate, make the community liveable again:
A multi-purpose sustainable modern community centre
Coalville needs a place that people can call their own. The loss of the mining industry has taken something of the heart out the community. There is value in coming together and sharing common goals, experiences and enjoying community. Coalville is flush with eating and drinking houses, but where can families, the young and the elderly interact with each other? Coalville needs a place that is available 7 days a week as a resource for all ages.
A social space where good things happen
The community needs a place to celebrate and learn creatively. We have already held birthday parties in the building as well as Marriage Courses (where existing marriages and long term relationships are strengthened), but renewed facilities would hugely increase the possibilities.
A contact point and a bridge to those outside the church
It’s an outworking of our beliefs that causes a desire to impact the local community with positive activities. We are respecters of people and want to influence and foster a real sense of inclusive community and are committed to seeing a better life for people.
A safe place of refuge and resource
The building will not only have an atmosphere of celebration, but also a source of help and support to those who feel they have little to celebrate. There are many groups already at work in the wider community that would benefit from a venue in Coalville town centre.
